Guys, this one is mainly for you. We’re talking about date nights, we all enjoy them, and the problem comes with how they fit into your budget. If you have heard this mantra from me once you have heard it a thousand times, save money well so you can spend money well. It is possible to keep a budget *and* enjoy a nice evening out.
The other day a friend told me, “This guy I went out with took me horseback riding, it was really great. And then, the worse thing happened, he ran out of quarters.” It *is* completely possible to enjoy an evening out on a budget and have a ton of fun without it seeming “cheap,” you just have to think ahead of time.
Here are a couple of ideas for Valentines Day On A Budget in three main categories to make date night memorable, fun, and affordable.
Date Night In
Here is idea number one, Movie Night In. Start by pick your favorite movie, though I don’t necessarily recommend anything in the horror genre. Once you have your movie selected, or while one of you picks the movie, start on a snack. My personal favorite is caramel popcorn. Or you could go for a themed snack. If you’re watching The Minions movie, (my all time favorite,) get minion gummies to go with it. Last but not least, PLEASE silence your cell phones and enjoy the show.
Idea number dos, Dinner for Two. Start by picking who does what. One of you pick the main course, the other pick dessert and the side dish. Then, craft the dishes that you both picked together. Believe it or not a lot of fun stories come from times spent cooking together.
Next, break out the fancy dishes. White napkins, silverware, the whole works. Remember, just because you are eating at home doesn’t mean you can’t dress it up. Once you have finished making the meal take a break, run get into nice clothes, and then enjoy your “fine dining” experience.
Date Night Out
Date night out idea number one. Go to a local Arts Market. For this one start by remembering that you will be outside for most if not all of the afternoon, dress appropriately. Bring a fold up umbrella and or ponchos just in case. Or, if you live anywhere other than Florida (which is where I live) then you may want to bring a jacket. Bring a thermos of either water or something warm for you to enjoy as you walk around.
Packing a classy picnic lunch or dinner can be a lot of fun. It’s a nice and fun way to enjoy your afternoon. There are two approaches that can be taken here. One, surprise her. Two, talk to her ahead of time. Hopefully you know what her favorite meal is, and her favorite drink is always a nice plus. Some additional thoughts? Bring a blanket. The last thing you need is a wet butt or a nice outfit ruined with grass stains while on a picnic.
Date night with friends
A date night out with friends can be a ton of fun! One thing we love to do is plan a scavenger hunt. You can find a lot of scavenger hunt lists online with a quick google search. Or, if you don’t see one you like, you can create your own. Incorporate a food stop half way through your night and laugh about some of your finds. For added fun post your scavenger hunt finds to Instagram and review the best photos in each category.
Another idea, have a “taste off.” The rules to this are pretty simple, set a budget per couple and create a couple of categories. Then, walk around an area with a lot of restaurants and rank your favorite foods and where they are from. One thing we like to do is to print off a couple of “taste off” forms. We give one form to each person or couple and have them fill it out as they walk around.
If you don’t want to go out for the night, a fun idea with friends that we always enjoy is a game night. We always have each person bring his or her favorite game and all meet at a central ish location. Then, have everyone, or everyone who can actually cook, bring a snack each to share.
Having fun doesn’t have to break the bank, even though if you’re playing monopoly (better set aside two or three days) then it just might. Either way, it’s easy to enjoy a fun time with those you love this Valentine’s Day.
It’s easy for you to win Valentine’s Day on a budget if you just give a little bit of thought ahead of time. Bonus idea? Give your Valentine chocolate. It’s always a good plan.
Have a happy Valentine’s Day!
