No offense to adults everywhere, but honestly, some of them make it seem like you need to be a genius to stand out and do well in school or your career. If you don’t follow a careful plan of prep-school kindergarten, make all the right grades (and friends), go to the good schools, and outshine everyone around you, you don’t really stand a chance of doing well in life.
Jordan Raynor does not agree. He has written a great little book called “Stand Out: the ridiculously simple guide to standing out in your career”. It’s less than 20 pages long and has three simple points. I think he’s onto something. Jordan says, “I hate books that are longer than they have to be, and ten minutes is all the time I need to share the information other people spend years trying to uncover. As I tell every student, “You can’t imagine how low the bar is for you to be successful in this world.”
Jordan is an entrepreneur I had the privilege to speak with a couple of months ago. He is the Founder and CEO of Vocreo, a company that helps entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses. After speaking with him I did a little digging and found out he had a book. I bought it the same day and am drawn by the simple truth he presents. I also generally hate to read so the fact that it’s about 20 pages is awesome!
It really isn’t rocket science to stand out at work. Here are 3 Simple Ways To Stand Out:
1 – Show up on time.
That seems fairly simple doesn’t it? I mean really. Shouldn’t we show up on time as a standard part of ‘how to be a person’? Unfortunately a lot of young people think that being a few minutes late here and there every week is okay. It isn’t. Jordan says, “Show up on time, and you’re sure to stand out.”
2 – Respond to your messages.
Apparently people don’t respond to phone calls, texts, and emails. Just by responding in a timely fashion you can stand out. Jordan does say that people usually don’t respond because they are overwhelmed not because they are rude. And someone who is so overwhelmed they can’t respond to their messages are probably not going to stand out much at work. One of his tips is to start fresh today. If you have so many you can never catch up then mark them as read, archive them all, and start again today!
3 – Complete your tasks on time
The key to this, according to Jordan, is to write everything down. Every single thing. And I have found this to be true. I write down lists of things to do for each day (in advance and as I’m going through the day). If I forget to write it down I guarantee it isn’t going to get done. He has some other specific ideas on how to organize your time and tasks which is one of the reasons you should pick up his book!
It is easy to think that these simple concepts are just to ‘simple’ to work. But I honestly believe it! Most people don’t consistently show up on time, respond to their messages in a timely manner or just do their work. If you do you are probably going to stand out. It’s simple but not really easy. If it were easy everyone would be doing it.
As we are coming up on a new year most of us are thinking about resolutions. I despise the whole idea of trying to change our life just at the new year but I am all about improving where ever and whenever I can. Starting fresh today sounds like a good idea doesn’t it? Why wait till January 1st?
Of course it’s going to take me till then to clear our my inbox!
