Earlier this year I heard about a thrift shop challenge conducted by a family we know personally. As soon as I heard the story I knew I had to share it here with you all on TeensGotCents!
Rebecca Brown is one of those fun moms you hear about all the time. She goes out with her girls in search of the best coffee shop, takes them on impromptu road trips, and came up with the fun idea for this thrift shop challenge. She told me everyone needed a fall wardrobe update so they made a game out of it. They set aside a whole day for shopping. She shared the rules they used but obviously you can set whatever rules you like!
1 – You had to pick an inspiration outfit from Pinterest and save it to your phone.
2 – While shopping you try to match the outfit as closely as possible.
3 -Everything HAD to either be from a thrift/consignment store or something you already owned. Mrs. Brown let me know that almost 100% of their outfits came from thrift stores.
4 – The entire outfit from head to toe (including shoes and jewelry/accessories could not cost more than $30. Mrs. Brown was the only one who came even close to $30 and that was because of the boots she bought.
Here they are with their inspiration outfit and their finished product!
They even got their cousin Josh in on the fun day. He made sure that everyone stuck by the rules and they kept up their energy with plenty of trips to Starbucks. He had an inspiration outfit and everything and he did a great job don’t you think!?!
Sadly, everything didn’t work out for all of the sisters. The youngest, Miriam, wasn’t able to find her inspiration outfit that day. They just didn’t have anything in her small size that would work. That’s the truth of shopping secondhand. You can’t always find what you are looking for.
I don’t love shopping. In fact, I really don’t like it at all because everything is SO expensive. The way the Brown family made a fun game out of shopping and kept everything affordable is an amazing idea. You could go with a group of friends and set your own rules and even try to do one inspiration outfit and one you put together yourself.
Have you ever done something like this before? Doesn’t it sound like fun?
