Recently I had the opportunity to try out a beats pill and to say I was excited would be an understatement. Eva was kind enough (and maybe not feeling well) to let me have it for a week to put it through its paces. It was a lot of fun and overall a really surprising experience. I really wasn’t expecting to get to do a beats pill review.
Let me start off first by thanking Eva for the opportunity to try out the device, it was her idea in the first place so and is greatly appreciated (and eases the tension with the whole Apple vs. Microsoft thing). She got the pill for her eighteenth birthday. The pill by beats is a super portable speaker system that can crank out your music of choice via Bluetooth or Auxiliary. The speaker is about the size of a 6 inch sub from Subway boasting four speakers encased into a pill like housing and produces some serious beat. It comes in a variety of colors, NFC (Near field connection), and the newer versions even have the ability to charge your phone on the fly. Here are a few of the pros and cons of the beats pill by Dre.
The beats pill is a pretty cool device that’s super portable so you put it in a backpack, purse, or just hold it and take it wherever you want. The speakers are loud. No kidding – you can turn it all the way up and become known to the neighbors next door. The pill has some pretty surprising bass coming out of such a small package, it isn’t going to shake the house down but it doesn’t run flat or sound muddy. The Bluetooth connectivity is quick and easy and depending on the phone can read texts to you. With the on board microphone you can respond to texts and receive calls all with just your voice. I can see this feature becoming really handy when I am working on homework.
The pill is such a simple device so you don’t need much time to learn how to use and what every button is from the very beginning. The Beats symbol is also a button and is acts as a pause, play, skip button. It’s just a great idea since its right up front, ready for use. The device itself feels really solid and I think it could handle a few drops (Disclaimer: I DID NOT DROP THIS DEVICE EVA!). When resting on its rubber pad the speakers tilt at a certain level so all of the sound is pumped towards your ears. Pretty smart design by Beats which I have never seen before with any other speaker on the market.
Looking at the pill in the past I always had low expectations for it because of its size compared to other speakers. To be honest I expected to not like a lot of things about the pill. While I do have some dislikes I have been surprised by what it has brought to the table. One thing that bothers me about many Bluetooth speakers is when their battery gets low. Many speakers create an annoying hissing noise when music isn’t playing or they are on low volume. There is no audible noise when you adjust the volume on the pill, even when a song isn’t playing.
The startup noise is pretty cool at first but after a while can get annoying especially if you accidentally turn it on when everybody is sleeping. I cannot find anything else to find fault in except little things such as the case and (of course) the price tag but anything good will cost these days.
All in all the beats pill by Dre is a great little speaker system that can make your music library available to everyone around you with excellent quality. NFC and Bluetooth make it super easy to connect to compatible devices and the AUX in and AUX out make it usable with almost anything with a 3.5mm jack.
So bottom line is it worth the $170-$200 dollar price tag? In my honest opinion, yes, if it fits your needs. If you are on the go a lot and just want something quick and easy to bring with you the smaller pill is perfect. If you want a little more thump to it the larger pill know as the XL is bigger and louder. This is a great speaker and I highly recommend it – thanks Eva!
