A couple of weeks ago my mom and I went with our friend Sam to the Star Trek movie. (Christopher Pine and Zachary Quinto are currently my iPod background, loved the movie!) We went on a Friday before noon so that the tickets would only be $6.00. After all, why should I pay $13 for a movie when I can go for less than half that? Afterwards we grabbed some lunch in the food court at the mall and I decided to go and take a look at Claire’s.
You already know that I rarely go to the mall. Ever. And it’s even more rare for me to buy anything while I am there. It’s just too expensive and to tell the truth, I don’t love to shop just for the sake of shopping. However, I do love Claire’s and I have since I was a little girl. It’s where I got my ears pierced and they always had inexpensive things that I could get for just a few dollars. Which is why it is still one of my favorite stores today.
So I walked down to the store and on the way entered some swirling vortex of craziness. The next thing I knew I had picked out two things and was at the cash register. The lady told me that if I wanted to pick out a third item that it would be half price. Sounded good to me! (First mistake.) I had been eyeing a large set of the cutest earrings ever so I grabbed them thinking that they would be half price. (Second mistake.) I paid the lady with my debit card and didn’t even look at how much money I had spent. (Third mistake.)
I proudly joined mom and our friend back at the food court showed them what I had gotten and told them all about my wonderful purchases. It is at this moment that I took a look at the receipt. TWENTY FOUR DOLLARS! It was $24.00. I almost choked. And then the shame of Buyers Remorse swept over me. I could not believe that I had spent $24.00 at Claire’s. I didn’t want to spend that much. I didn’t mean to spend that much! But I did. And I felt sick. And then mom laughed at me. And I put my head down on the table and thought about the end of the world. And Sam laughed at me too!
Mom reminded me that I could go back down to the store and return one or more of the items. I thought about it and immediately decided to make the return. I wanted the first two items but decided to return the third item that I had purchased on impulse at the register. The lady at Claire’s was great and made the return without any problems. My money was safely back in my bank account where it belonged and I felt 10 times better!
After lunch mom and I had some errands to do and ended up having the best day ever. We did some shopping for a new desk for me (which I will tell you all about in another post) and then decided to splurge a little with some gift cards mom had been saving. We went to Cold Stone first:
The ice cream at Coldstone is so delicious and it tastes even better when it is free!
Next we looked around the mall for quite a while and just enjoyed ourselves. We even went to the Build A Bear store and I relived the good ole days when it was my favorite store at the mall. And yes, I do still have my cat with all of her clothes and accessories…
We happened to go by LOFT while we were there. I don’t think that I have ever been in a regular LOFT store. I love their clothes and have gotten some great deals on Black Friday at the Outlet Mall. Mom and I decided to take a look. Best idea ever! They were having an amazing sale. All of their clearance items were 50% off. Then we found out that since mom has a LOFT credit card that they would give us an additional percentage off sale and clearance items. I got t-shirts for $5.10 each! And a $70 skirt for $12.74! I purchased several other things and was able to complete my summer shopping for a grand total of $52.52. At LOFT! Whoot! I was so thankful to have saved my money in my clothing envelope so that I could take advantage of these great deals!
After looking around some more we had an early dinner at Cheesecake Factory. The sweet potato fries were delicious! Mom and I shared an amazing hamburger and enjoyed sitting outside. We still have money left on the gift card to be able to go back sometime!
Turned out to be a great day and I have learned my lesson! Be careful about the offers that stores make at the register. And remember that if you make several purchases and they offer you half off on one of them? The half off item is going to be the least expensive item that you buy NOT the most expensive! I was also reminded how important it is to save your money. I could never have taken advantage of the deals at LOFT if I hadn’t had some money put aside.
Feeling very blessed…
