A few months ago my mom read an article about something called a ‘Capsule Wardrobe.’ We had never heard of anything like that so it was very interesting to us.
Basically, a capsule wardrobe is taking a small number of clothing items and making as many outfits with them as you can. Its a way to make the most out of every single piece in your wardrobe. According to Wikipedia, Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique is the first person to use the term. She thought you should build your wardrobe around a few key pieces of clothing and then add in a few seasonal items as needed.

We chose three necklaces, one scarf and two pair of shoes – plus the pair I wore to the shop.
It takes a lot of thought in the beginning and you have to be sure to have a good mix of basic pieces as well as a few fun things to spice things up. I really wanted to experiment a little bit but to be perfectly honest…I’m not very good at coordinating clothing.
I’m not terrible at it – I can put an outfit together – but it isn’t my strongest point and I just felt like I needed some help.
So I called the person I KNEW could help me out! Kim is a manager at my favorite store, Maurices. If anyone could put together an amazing capsule wardrobe she could do it! I went in to the shop one evening about an hour before closing. Kim and Heather got to work immediately and started ‘shopping’ for me! So much fun!

This is what life would be like if I had personal shoppers!
And now I know why having a personal shopper is something that rich people have…
We picked out about 15 pieces (accessories included) to make up the entire wardrobe and then put together as many outfits as we could before they closed! It was so much fun and I hope that you will be inspired by some of the pictures to use the pieces you already own in ways that you haven’t thought of before!
As you can see we chose some basics that could go with each other. Black leggings, khaki slacks and jeans go with so many things. We tried to find tops that would match all three of the bottoms and then added the cute denim dress as well.
Here are the outfits that Kim and Heather helped me put together:

We started with the leggings…

Then we moved to the jeans…

Here’s the dress. I think we could have done a lot more with this if we’d had more time!

And the khaki pants…
Sadly, I didn’t get to keep any of the outfits, but I may have to go back for a few special things once I save up some money.
If you decide to try putting together your own capsule wardrobe please send me some pics! I would love to share them here on TeensGotCents!
