Changing the World One Investment At A Time

by Eva 1 Comment

How are teens investing their money to affect their communities? See how organizations like the Lutheran Church Extension Fund offer investing opportunities specifically for teens!

As you already know I rarely talk about investing. I don’t really understand it and whats worse I don’t really care. (Just being honest…) Teens have enough problems without trying to understand the stock market.

As far as I’m concerned we should be focusing on learning to manage our money well by saving part of what we make for college, a car, and our retirement as well as learn to live carefully so we can actually afford to go out with friends occasionally. All that stock market stuff can wait a little while… (and yes I know it’s important and I will get to it eventually!)

Changing My Mind On Investing

A few months back I heard about LCEF. It’s the Lutheran Church Extension Fund. Of course, I had no idea what that meant but now that I know I believe it’s something you will want to know about too because of the work it does, even if you are not a member of the Lutheran church.

Teen Investing
Many of us teens have been raised to believe that we, if we just put our mind to it, can change the world. But what does this mean for most young teens today? I’m so busy trying to do well in school and run this website and make it through my day that I sometimes think that wanting to change the world is kinda like a beauty pageant winner wanting “world peace”. (No offense to beauty queens everywhere.)
What does it mean to change the world? And how am I supposed to do something so grand? It might sound good at first but it doesn’t have much real value to anyone because the thought is so vague.
For those of us who are people of faith, it can get a little more complicated. It’s easy to want to live a life of radical faith and service, and quite a bit harder to actually do it. It doesn’t feel radical to be 15 years old, live at home, go to school all day, and work hard at a part time job in order to save up for our first car does it?
My vision of a radical world-changing life is living somewhere where there is no electricity and there are unknown dangers and really big bugs (or worse) lurking around every corner. And yes I realize that sounds really dramatic and silly now that I’ve said it out loud.
When it comes to “investing” so many of us, and I’m including myself here, really don’t understand what it is, how to do it, or what the point is, other than to try and make a lot of money. Not that there’s anything wrong with being successful but so many teens and millennials know there’s more to life than making lots of money. We want to make a real difference in this world, right now, just as we are.
So what does investing, LCEF, and changing the world have to do with each other?

Changing the World Through Investing

Most of us don’t really want to invest money just to make more money if there is an alternative that allows us to do more. We do want to impact the world for good even if we aren’t on another continent somewhere taking cold showers and suffering in some #firstworldproblem sort of way. LCEF gives teens the opportunity to make a real difference by combining our small investments to make a big impact.
Currently there are more than 10,000 members in the Young Investors (Y.I. Club) and nearly 2,000 are between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. They are referred to as World Changers. It only takes $25 to open and is a great way to invest your money and help people across the country and around the world.
Instead of taking investor fund and investing in the stock market, LCEF uses the money to help congregations and ministry organizations expand their reach into their local community.

You can start saving with LCEF and know your money is impacting real people in an incredibly positive way. As a Christian, it is a blessing to know your investment is allowing more people to be told about Jesus and helped in the best way we could ever help someone.

We Can Make A Difference TODAY!

While you are investing in local communities you are also earning a competitive rate of return on the money you put into your investment account. It’s the best of both worlds really. You earn something on your savings and help make the world a better place.

The more I think about it the more I realize that being careful with your money as a teen and planning well for your future is in fact a way to live a radical life. If you aren’t contributing to soaring credit card and student loan debt then you are making a different choice than many others our age.

If you have a savings account or an envelope stashed away with a lot of cash in it consider investing in an organization like LCEF. You can change the world, or at least help a little, with just $25!

Here’s to being a World Changer! If you have time, take a look HERE. LCEF has a new blogger and it’s me!

Hi guys, I’m Eva!

Welcome to TeensGotCents, my name is Eva Baker and I founded this site when I was sixteen. I'm a complete money nerd and I love helping teens learn how money works. Also, I watch too much Netflix. Although I still have a lot to learn about personal finance I hope you will use my successes and failures to help reach your own goals whether you want to go to college debt free, get a part time job, work on a fun DIY project that will save you money or just read about ways you can learn to manage your money well as a teen. So glad you're here! Read more about my story here.
