For as long as I can remember we have had a gift drawer or gift shelf but most people refer to it as a gift closet. If you haven’t heard of this then let me explain. A gift closet is simply a place (usually a closet) where you keep potential gifts throughout the year. Some people do Christmas shopping throughout the year and others use the space to store up any type of present they might use throughout the year. Here are some of my gift closet ideas for teens.
Having gifts on hand is normally something that you might think about but it is such an awesome idea! Although the saving lots of money part is really nice I am more excited about being able to give my friends really nice gifts that were affordable to me. There are a number of ways to get started and keep your gift closet stocked. Here are some of my gift closet ideas for teens to help you get started:
Be sure to take a moment to quickly scan the clearance section of your favorite stores, but don’t discount ANY clearance section. One of my favorite finds over the years was a clearance section at Office Max – not typically the place you would buy your best friend a present right?!? We happened to be there to make a return and while mom took care of that I decided to go look around. They had a whole clearance section of Smash It books at the end of one of the aisles. I think everything was at least 60% off. Most of my friends love to keep a journal or scrapbook so I bought several of them along with a lot of the stickers and other decorations. I got so much stuff! At my best friends next birthday I was able to put together a whole set for her. I couldn’t afford to do that at regular retail prices.
Most of us don’t want to buy our friends second hand presents but keep an open mind and don’t miss out on the deals you could get during your next visit to a thrift shop. Often you can find clothing and all sorts of items that are brand new with the tags still on or still in the original wrapping. When you find something that you know suits one of your friends or a family member then go ahead and add it to your gift closet. It will be waiting for you when you need it and no one ever has to know. Unless you want to brag about paying 35 cents for the awesome new shirt you got your BFF for his birthday…
This is another surprising place to stock up on gifts especially if you have children in your family that you buy for. We have also gotten some great toys and baby clothes for baby showers that were brand new and super cute. Once one of our neighbors had a garage sale and she had a number of very nice new toys for sale. Mom paid a dollar each for them. When we got home we looked them up and found that all of them sold for over $20 each at the store! Yard sales can also be a great source for books, most of which have never been read, so keep that in mind if you know someone who loves to read.
A Few Things to Keep In Mind
*Make sure it’s a really good deal – at least 50% off of retail.
*Don’t buy something unless you have someone specific in mind that will love it!
*Remember to go ‘shopping’ in your gift closet before you go out and purchase a gift.
*You might want to stay on the look-out for good deals on gift wrap and such as well.
If you will keep your eyes open you never know what type of good deal you might find. It is the best feeling in the world to give a present to someone you know they will love and that was a great deal! If you only do your shopping at the last minute it is much more likely that you are going to pay full price for the gift. Just remember to think about what you can add to your gift closet whenever you are shopping and you will be amazed!
Do you already do something like this? What do you have in your gift closet right now?
