How to Make Cheap Gifts From the Dollar Store

by Eva 10 Comments

You may be asking yourself doubtfully, “Can I really find good quality presents at a dollar store?!” Yes, some of their products are not great quality, but I’m here to prove that even on a “dollar store” budget you really can give thoughtful, unique gifts!

My sister and I challenged ourselves to create nice presents from the local DollarTree.

You can really give affordable, thoughtful and unique gifts at Dollar store! Check these tips on how to make cheap gifts at Dollar Store!

Our goals:

  1.  Gifts that are quality
  2.  A gift idea for a guy
  3.  A gift idea for a girl
  4.  $10 each!

Aaand… we did it!! Come along on our escapade by watching the video below or keep reading to learn how you can do it too!

Here’s how to buy awesome, inexpensive gifts from the dollar store:

First

Come up with a theme and color scheme for the gift.

As we were looking around I realized the dollar store has all sorts of fantastic stuff for gifts! Right now they have a big selection of back-to-school supplies –perfect for putting together a little present for the special teacher in your life. Why not raid the extensive snack section and create an emergency snack stash for your dad? These are just a few ideas– there is no end to the possibilities!

Second

Brainstorm a container! I decided to fill a makeup bag with some girly stuff, and my sister grabbed a popcorn bucket to load with a movie night kit.

A few other ideas for a container are: a canning jar, basket, tote bag, water bottle, flower pot, watering can, or even a purse with pockets. Get creative!

Third

Start shopping! Think of things that will fit in your container and go with the gift theme.

I started by making a beeline for the festive nail polish, added a card of bobby pins, a bottle of lotion, and, of course, some chocolate. <3 I still had money left in my budget (Wow!) so I threw in a compact mirror and two sparkly headbands. Tada!

My sister nestled a 3 pack of microwave popcorn in the popcorn bucket, three boxes of movie candy, two sodas, and a $3 certificate to stream a movie from Amazon.

Viola! A two person movie night kit, all for $10!

So there you go, two $10 quality gifts from the dollar store!

Do you have frugal gift hacks to share? Are you ready to dive into a dollar store and get the best quality for your money? Which idea was your favorite?

Leave a note in the comments; I’d love to hear from you!

A few years ago, I interviewed college student Tim Ciello about how he managed to land a full-ride scholarship to his dream school. Now, he’s back (and graduated) to talk about what life without student loan debt is like and what his scholarships ended up not covering. While he admits that he hasn’t exactly figured out money as an adult yet, he has learned tons of valuable money and life lessons during his time as a student.

Dog-sitting is an awesome job for responsible teenagers who love to be around animals and can work independently. Plus, it’s perfect to work around your school or work schedule. I had my first dog-sitting experience (with a super cute Australian Labradoodle), and now I’m convinced this may be the most perfect first job for teens looking for a little extra cash. Don’t forget to check the pics to see the cute dog snaps I took!
