At the beginning of August, I started attending my arts boarding high school, and it has drastically changed my life. It’s my dream high school, but living on campus on a budget is not so easy. By living on campus, I have developed so much independence. It has been great, but I have also had money issues which is why I needed to learn how to coupon in high school.
My first week, I spent all of my $50 my parents had given me. I know, BIG mistake. The bad thing about it is, I spent it on stuff I didn’t even need. Like going out to eat and shopping at the little shops around town. My money was also supposed to last me two whole weeks! After that first week, I realized that I needed to find a way to save money on the things so I wouldn’t have this problem as often.
Setting a budget
Ever since I started living on campus, I’ve realized just how expensive things are. I don’t have an unlimited supply of money. My parents put me on a budget. I also realized just how much stuff I need throughout the week. You have your basic necessities like food, hygiene, and school expenses, and you also have your extra activities like going out to eat with your friends, going shopping, and online shopping (sorry mom).
Couponing as a High School student
After about the second week of living on campus, I knew there had to be a way for me to save money and still be able to go out and do things that don’t involve school. I went to my mom for ways, and she told me about couponing. I knew what coupons were, I just never thought of them actually saving me that much money. However, my mother had a whole different opinion on them. She said that she ultimately would save around $50 on groceries alone! I knew I had to look into couponing for myself.
I started by doing research and figuring out which couponing sites were the best. I found that coupon.com was a great site that had many coupons for the items I needed. The process to get the coupons was very simple. I went down the list and “clipped” the coupons I wanted, confirmed my phone number, and printed them out. While you’re clipping your coupons there is even a bar at the top that tells you how much you will be saving if you use all of the coupons you clip, which is very convenient.
Coupons and shopping from a list
I then made a list of items I needed or needed to stock up on. After making a list, I searched to see exactly how much each of those items would cost. I then went to the couponing sites and searched for coupons for those items. When I would find a coupon for it, I would write down how much I would save from them and then subtract from the original cost of the item.
Time to save some money
After finding the coupons I needed, I printed and cut them out, and then went to Walmart to start saving! I got a few snacks, toothpaste, and some makeup. Altogether, everything originally would have cost me $36.81 before tax. By using coupons I paid $27.81. I saved a total of $9. I usually go shopping like this once a week, so if I save around $10 a week using coupons, I save $40 a month. To a teenager who is on their own, this is great! If I had gotten more items, I would have saved even more.
Couponing is definitely worth it. Now, I can go out and do more extra activities. Who wouldn’t want that?
