Mystery Shopper Jobs for Teens

by Charisma Maddox Leave a Comment

Being a mystery shopper is a great way to make some extra cash. Find out how a teen is able to get in on this part-time gig.

How do large companies like Target, Walmart, GameStop and Best Buy ensure that their employees are following procedures and providing the best customer service possible? One way is by utilizing mystery shoppers, people who are hired to shop like normal consumers and report their experiences back to the company. Although a teen under 18 cannot technically be a mystery shopper, there are other ways to be involved in the process. And once you turn 18 it can be a great way to earn fun evenings out for free and put a little extra cash in your pocket.

Mystery Shopping at Target

There a many different departments you can do mystery shopping like clothing, furniture, home appliances, toys, cosmetics, housewares, gardening, toiletries and much more. For the first time around my sister and I decided to mystery shop in the electronics department. The plan was for me to attempt and purchase an adult-rated video game. Since I am a minor, it is against the law for me to buy an adult-rated video game without parent consent or a legal guardian. My job was to buy an adult video game and my sister was to observe everything happening in the process. I attempted to buy Battlefield 1 and the very first thing they did at the register was ask for an ID and my age. Therefore, Target followed all the rules and procedures that are important.

Most companies would like you to make a purchase during the time you spend shopping there to get the full experience, but, the company reimburses you for any money spent on purchases for the job. This is a good thing to keep in mind while mystery shopping for various companies since you may be spending a bit of your own money upfront. Your income depends on how many jobs you do per week or month.

As a teen, I really don’t know much about the car buying process. In fact, I am a total newbie. Buying my first car was intimidating and a little bit scary. I quickly learned it wasn’t as easy as just going to the dealership and picking out the prettiest car I could find and paying the salesperson. The first day of my car search took a lot out of me and my mom -- so much so that I have to share the story of buying a first car so you know what to expect when you’re ready to pick up the keys. The Story of Buying My First Car – Part OneOctober Dress ProjectOnly One Hero – Go Pro!
