Cringing at the holes in your autumn wardrobe? Glancing dubiously at the holes in your wallet? Thrift stores are a great way to stretch the money in your clothes envelope!
Let me show you that spending just a bit more time and thought can cut your wardrobe costs in half!
I realize when I say “thrift store” you may envision darkly lit dungeons with wastelands of clothing dumped on the floor, and a shady character behind the desk. Some hole-in-the-wall thrift stores are like this. But the ones my family frequently pillage are not like that at all! They are big, bright, and roomy with lots of space to move around and breeze through orderly racks of clothing.

In this post I’m going to tell about my trip to a thrift store and then to a standard retailer the next day, and give the pros and cons of spending money at each.
After traipsing about Deseret Industries for awhile we came up with two guy outfits and two gal outfits to share with you.
I so fell in love with this outfit that it just had to come home with me! <3 We tried the tunic with a variety of different jeans, leggings, and shoes, each changing its style, and finally decided on this combination. The boots were TOTALLY. ADORABLE. Everything was sooo comfy and in wonderful condition!
Wow! As you can see, we found some great brands for amazing prices! This would originally have cost me $110, but our total at DI was only $14! Do your math and diiee!
Thrift stores are for you guys too! My poor bro is currently out of commission due to oral surgery so I had to hang these clothes for their pictures. 😉
I just have to say, guys, you are SO easy to shop for! I really like these pieces together; plaid is totally in right now!
Recognize these KILLER brands, anyone???!!! So cool to actually be able to find this sort of thing in an amazing price range!
Meet Me At the Library
I adored this vintage, plaid skirt as soon as I pulled it from the rack and just HAD to find something to go with it! I would price these adorable, distressed Converse at about $40, but look at what we found them for!!! And nerdy filing cabinets are great for props-btw. 😉
Um, I have no idea what to say about this outfit…it will make you look like Captain America?!! I sooo loved the color of this t-shirt that I got my mom to buy it for my brother just to see it on his handsomeness!
Woah! Okay, so apparently these ‘vintage’ (I prefer the term ‘manly’) jeans are worth $70? So guys, let’s spend a mere $14 on a total outfit rather than $146!
Shop ‘til you drop? Mission accomplished! My legs hurt so badly and I even drew blood (who knew hangers could cut?), but it was awesome!
Thrift shopping can take up a lot of time sifting through ugly clothes, but I definitely believe it is worth all the money I save on my wardrobe! And if you pay attention to brand names and wear (like pilling, stains, and rips) you really can be dressed nicely from thrift stores! Search this website for ‘shopping with sarah’ for some great tips, and you’ll soon be a thrift shopping pro!
Next we drove to Macy’s and drooled over all the adorable clothes. But the prices! Ouch! Here, I’ll give you some examples.
Splashing in the Rain
This vest, with its deep color and cool details, caught my eye so I had to use it. I love, love, love brown boots! This outfit was very simple and comfortable yet cute and classy enough to go out for coffee with friends.
Yes, I fell in love with this too. But a glance at the price tags sent my feet dragging to the return rack. HOW would I be able to pay $217 for one outfit?! And so I happily -only slightly wistfully- have stuck with my adorable clothes from Deseret.
Meet my mani-friend who so sweetly allowed me to photograph him as he modeled clothes for me! I know he’s headless, but don’t judge!
No seriously, my mom, older sister, and I had already spent so much time in the Macy’s junior department that the hostages back home were starting to text, and we hadn’t even moved on to the guys’ clothes yet! So I got this dude to help. 😉
Compare this with the extraordinary prices we found at Deseret Industries!
Here is what I got from my shopping adventures!
Clothing Quality– great! shop smartly
Shopping Experience– if you like the search it is fantastic fun!
Clothing Quality– wonderful! Nice to have multiple size options
Shopping Experience– good! understaffed but easy to navigate
You can still totally shop retail stores ‘centsibly’ and your closet will look great, but I suggest diving into a thrift store to save more this autumn!
I’d love to hear your thrift store vs. retail store thoughts in the comments!
