You all know that Sarah is the resident bargain shopper extraordinare and I have been trying to learn from her on how to get the very best deals at Goodwill and other second hand stores. You may even remember my somewhat questionable results when left on my own at a Goodwill in my town. Well – Sarah to the rescue! Earlier this month my mom and I had the opportunity to drive a few hours south to visit Sarah and her family. We decided well in advance that this would be the perfect opportunity for Sarah to take me under her wing and teach me the secrets of second hand shopping! Sarah’s sister Hannah decided to join us so we were all set for an evening of bargaining adventures!
Of course, you can’t shop on an empty stomach. We made a quick stop at Tijuana Flats on the way to Goodwill that afternoon. We laughed. We talked. We strategized…
After dinner was finished and we were fully prepared for our bargain extravaganza we headed out to the most amazing Goodwill I have ever seen. It was HUGE! No wonder Sarah finds such amazing deals – our Goodwill is about a quarter of the size. Almost as soon as we walked into the store things got a little competitive. We decided that we were going to have a little friendly game of ‘who can find the most horrific outfit for the other shopper’. There was smack talk and everything. You can see in the picture below that I am feeling pretty great about the game and Sarah has her serious face on. My mom and Hannah declined to participate.
Before we started on our quest for the most hideous outfit we did do a little serious shopping. Sarah reminded me that you really have to dig through those racks and look at EVERY single piece of clothing if you expect to find something amazing. She also reminded me that sometimes you can’t necessarily be looking for something specific you just have to look. And keep looking. She has some great advice in previous articles. Take a look right HERE for specific tips on buying jeans and HERE for general advice.
Sarah and I started in the same area but quickly split up. We said we wanted to cover more ground but the truth was that neither of us wanted the other to see the outfit we were putting together for the comp. Sarah went directly to the shoe section while I stayed in the evening gown area for quite a while. Sarah immediately found a vintage pair of Adidas tennis shoes. They were $15. She tried them on and everything but decided to put them back in the end. They were really expensive and she wasn’t sure how much use she would really get from them.
And then things got real. Very real. We had completed our selections and had done our worst. It was time to try on the outfit that Sarah had chosen for me. I would never admit it to her – but I was scared. This girl knows her Goodwill and I knew that it was gonna be bad. I didn’t get too discouraged though. I had been quite successful and had picked an amazing outfit for her.
You will be happy to know that after a huge laugh and a lot of fun we got out of these lovely ensembles quickly. I don’t remember now if there was an official winner. We continued our shopping – real shopping – and each of us came out with some really good deals. It was a great way to spend an evening with good friends!
You may be wondering why Hannah’s purchases are not pictured here. Well. She found a few items for her business. We were so impressed with her idea that I’ve decided to tell you all about it in a separate post. It will be of interest to you – especially if you have ever done any babysitting to earn extra money!
