Have you heard of personality tests and career assessments and all those sorts of things? To be honest I really hadn’t heard much about them (or cared to be super honest) until recently. A family friend, Rhonda Boyle, is an expert on the StrengthsFinder Assessment and runs an amazing coaching/workshop business called Activate Your Strengths. I recently took the test and then had a session with Rhonda. She explained everything to me and it has really changed the way I perceive myself and helped me see so many things about myself I didn’t know.
Although this test is called StrengthsFinder it’s actually a way to measure talent. You take the test online and it only costs $9.95.
Rhonda told me that over 11.5 million people have taken the test so far. There are 34 talent themes and all of us have every one of them, but there are five to eight dominant talents. Depending on the individual those talents can be strengths or weaknesses but the good thing is that they can all be developed into a strength or made stronger.
Rhonda found out about the assessment seven years ago through a program at her church. They went through the ‘Living Your Strengths’ book and it completely transformed her life. She started telling all of her friends, especially those still in high school, about the test and how it could help give them direction for their lives.
If you take the test you can find out your top five talents and the test even gives you a report that describes each of the talents and helps you better understand your talents. This can not only help you be more self aware but can also help you see what kind of job you are most suited to as well. It took me less than an hour and it’s only $9.95!
My top five talents are:
Every one of of my talents are people related talents. This explains why I love meeting and interviewing people for this site, but don’t love the technical side of things or trying to understand how the site works.
At first I didn’t understand how one of my talents could be a weakness, but Rhonda explained it to me. She said that someone who has restorative as a talent might be great at fixing up and restoring things (like a house), going in and fixing an area of a company that isn’t doing well, or be good at helping with downtown rehabilitation. All great things. But a person with this talent might also want to fix people. And no one can fix another person without that persons permission. See how that talent could become a negative if you are always trying to fix a person that doesn’t want your help?
Another one of my talents is Adaptability. The positive side of this talent is that the person probably is easy going and doesn’t mind change too much. They are likely to enjoy a lot of variety in their life. The negative side of this talent is that you might not be reliable at times.
Although the test is a way to help you identify your weaknesses and improve them it was also a huge encouragement to me personally. It’s so easy to always talk about our failures and weaknesses and mistakes, and we do need to be aware of those things, but it was nice to hear about my strengths and the things I’m good at!
If possible you should take the test and then take a look at Rhonda’s website HERE. She has written a ton of blog posts all about these talents and how you can maximize them in your life. Here is one of the posts she has written on Empathy. It really helped me recognize this in my own life and see how it was a huge positive and also how it could impact me negatively.
I’m really grateful to Rhonda Boyle of Activate Your Strengths for taking the time to help me better understand my talents and appreciate who God made me to be. If you are ever in Oklahoma City you should go to one of her classes!
If you decide to take the assessment I would LOVE to hear what your top talents are! It was really neat to me to discover that my brother, my mom and I all share the Communication talent – so cool! Finding my out my talents has made a huge difference in how I approach people and how I think about myself. Can’t wait to hear what you find out!
