Any writers out there? Even if you’ve just scrawled a few funny lines on a paper napkin, you are a writer. In November I am doing this crazy thing called NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) —the yearly event challenging people of all ages to write a novel in one month. Like, 50,000 words in 30 days.
The prospect of a finished novel by the end of the month set me to thinking what I would do with it. I want to be a published author, and so many other teen writers do too, but professional graphic design services are SOOO expensive! Perry Elisabeth Design creates gorgeous, eye-catching book covers for a very low price!
Introducing Perry Elisabeth!
I had the privilege of interviewing Perry of Perry Elisabeth Design (my sister actually!) about the business she started to help writers become published authors! Even teens can do this with just a little, inexpensive help.
“When I first started Perry Elisabeth Design, I had several reasons, but the main one was I totally understood what it was like to be a first-time, low-budget, self-publishing author,” Perry told me.
Perry wrote and self-published her first book when she was just a teenager and had literally $25 to throw at the entire endeavor.
“I had to do everything myself or with volunteer help— editing, cover design, and interior formatting.”
The more she got out into the indie (independent authors) world she started to realize she wasn’t the only one in that low-budget situation trying to self-publish. Even more importantly, Perry realized the impact professional covers make on readers’ buying decisions. People really do judge a book by its cover!
“It struck me as sad that there were phenomenal stories that weren’t being read as much as they deserved. And simply because of the cover and/or interior quality!”
Perry decided she could offer a very low cost alternative–and Perry Elisabeth Design was born!
“Our main goal is to offer a package for every budget because—let’s face it, not everyone can spend the $300-600 that’s typical for cover designs elsewhere.”
A husband and wife team, they do a lot of cover design and interior formatting for both ebooks and printed books. They also offer basic blog/author website setup and design, as well as promotional items such as business cards, bookmarks, and web graphics.
They’ve also contracted with talented illustrators (one of them draws awesome world-maps for fantasy authors!) and an editor to make Perry Elisabeth Design a sort of one-stop self-publishing shop.
“Answering questions is one of my favorite ways I get to help younger authors achieve their publishing goals.
I remember the feeling of trying to figure out the whole self-publishing thing.”
Perry has been down the publishing road five times with her own books and uncountable times with clients, so she can answer nearly every question a new author has or point them in the right direction.
Free Resources for Teen Writers
A super great thing about Perry Elisabeth Design is they offer lots of free stuff for aspiring teen writers and authors!
As experienced authors who understand what it’s like, this couple has put out a checklist called The Ultimate Self-Publishing Checklist to help new authors publish their manuscript and manage promotion.
At the moment, they are also giving free covers to those brave (and slightly crazy) souls participating in NaNoWriMo.
Also in honor of NaNoWriMo, a nifty free tool for tracking word count over the course of November is available on Perry Elisabeth Design.
I’ve already downloaded a word-count tracker and applied for a free, mini cover for my NaNoWriMo novel named “Eagledare”!
Perry Elisabeth Design is a frugal way to share your story with the world! Who is ready to go be money-wise, super famous authors with me?
