My mom and I just got back from a conference for personal finance bloggers called FinCon. It is the second time we have gotten to go and I wanted to share with you why I think it is worth it to attend a conference like this even while you are still a teenager.
Going to a conference doesn’t necessarily seem like it would be a lot of fun, but it really is especially if you take advantage of visiting the city where it’s located. Last year we went to St. Louis and this year FinCon was in New Orleans. We usually try to stay an extra day or arrive early so we can enjoy some of the sites and just relax. The extra expense is worth it because this IS our vacation every year. Of course, the other bloggers at FinCon are amazing and are just my people – ya know? I love getting to know as many people as I can. It’s also fun to go to the classes and learn more about how to run your business!
When you attend a conference it gives you so many new ideas. No matter what industry you are in, you can be sure that someone there will share something with you that will make your work easier to do or just give you some tip that will be a huge help. You may also get to meet some of the most successful people in the field and that is a huge motivation. At FinCon they make some time at the conference where the experienced and successful bloggers take part in an afternoon of mentoring. This year I was paired up with Ruth Soukup of www.livingwellspendingless.com. Ruth was so encouraging but she also gave me some practical tips on how to improve my site and how to form new ways of earning income from it.
It helps you form friendships and business connections
Not only will you come away with a lot of new ideas you will also leave with a new set of friends and business connections. You may even have a chance to partner with some of the other attendees afterwards. In my case, I have already had several opportunities to be interviewed and to interview others for TeensGotCents. Those things would never have happened if I didn’t go.
TeensGotCents was nominated for a Plutus Award this year. The Plutus Awards are held every year at FinCon and are a way for personal finance bloggers to be recognized for the work we do online. I am so honored to say that TeensGotCents was given the award for “Best Personal Finance Blog for Teens/College Students/Young Adults”. It was so exciting to me and I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything!
If you are serious about your business, an activity or even a hobby, I would encourage you to find out if a conference is available for you to attend. If not maybe try starting one yourself! It may not be true in every area but most adults are very welcoming to teens if you are serious and they know you are working hard to be successful. I have been overwhelmed many times by how much support I have gotten even though I am so much younger than everyone else!
