VidAngel Saves the Day

by Anna 3 Comments

VidAngel is a smart way to save big when you watch your favorite movies from home. Get a group of friends together and make it a fun and inexpensive evening!

Once upon a time there lived a teenage girl who loved World War Two movies and whimsical word-lover plots. And she found a movie that was both. It was called The Book Thief.

The Book Thief PosterFrom the beginning she fell in love with the trailer, then the memes and the posters. But horror of horrors, dreams crushed! It had things in it she wasn’t allowed to watch, and it cost more than she had on her Amazon gift card! And thus VidAngel stepped in and saved her heart from breaking. Although she died over how wonderful the movie was. 😉

VidAngel wrote my happy ending!

What is VidAngel?

My family likes to watch movies on this awesome site called VidAngel! It has a wide selection of movies to choose from, and in the end are only one dollar each to watch. Super money saver!

VidAngel was begun August 2015 by four brothers, Niel, Daniel, Jeffrey, and Jordan Harmon. These self-described ‘simple country boys’ saw a need and met it by working together to provide affordable, family-friendly movies.

So how does it work?

Sign up for an account for free on VidAngel’s website.

Buy a movie for $20.

Choose which filters best fit your family. Bad language? Gore? Lack of clothes? Boom! It’s gone! If you have a large family like me this means that everyone can watch the movie together because you can filter out anything you don’t want the youngsters to see!

Watch it in the wee hours of the night with loads of snacks–chocolate is mandatory.

Dry your eyes. Calm your heart. Pick yourself up off the floor. It’s over.

Sell your movie back to VidAngel for $19. Ta-da! You just spent one whole dollar! It literally makes cents to stay home from the theater!

Or…if you love the movie don’t sell it back. Twenty dollars and it’s yours forever! Complete personal freedom!

But is it legal?

It would be illegal for a company to modify movies they offer as rentals, but VidAngel emphasizes  they sell movies. For each title on their website the company buys and stores an actual disc per account holder. Once you buy the movie it is yours to modify as you wish. No copyright issues whatsoever!!! Hi guys, I’m Eva!

Welcome to TeensGotCents, my name is Eva Baker and I founded this site when I was sixteen. I'm a complete money nerd and I love helping teens learn how money works. Also, I watch too much Netflix. Although I still have a lot to learn about personal finance I hope you will use my successes and failures to help reach your own goals whether you want to go to college debt free, get a part time job, work on a fun DIY project that will save you money or just read about ways you can learn to manage your money well as a teen. So glad you're here! Read more about my story here.

A few years ago, I interviewed college student Tim Ciello about how he managed to land a full-ride scholarship to his dream school. Now, he’s back (and graduated) to talk about what life without student loan debt is like and what his scholarships ended up not covering. While he admits that he hasn’t exactly figured out money as an adult yet, he has learned tons of valuable money and life lessons during his time as a student.
